Lexus NX: Reassembly

REASSEMBLY

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

NOTICE:

  • When using a vise, place aluminum plates between the part and vise.
  • When using a vise, do not overtighten it.

HINT:

  • Use the same procedure for the RH and LH sides.
  • The procedure listed below is for the LH side.

PROCEDURE

1. INSTALL OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT

*a

Protective Tape

(a) Before installing the outboard joint boot, wrap the splines of the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly LH with protective tape to prevent the outboard joint boot from being damaged.

(b) Install new parts to the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly LH in the following order.

Rear Drive Shaft Outboard Joint Boot Clamp LH

Rear Drive Shaft Outboard Joint Shaft Assembly LH

Outboard Joint Side

Inboard Joint Side

(1) Rear No. 2 drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH

(2) Outboard joint boot

(3) Rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH

(c) Install the outboard joint boot so that it is between the rear No. 2 drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH and rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly LH.

(d) Temporarily install the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH to the outboard joint boot.

(e) Pack the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly LH and outboard joint boot with grease from the boot kit.

Standard Grease Capacity:

55.0 to 65.0 g (2.0 to 2.2 oz)

NOTICE:

  • Do not apply grease to the part of the outboard joint boot that contacts the groove.
  • Do not allow foreign matter to enter the outboard joint boot.

2. INSTALL REAR NO. 2 DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP LH

(a) Install the rear No. 2 drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH to the outboard joint boot.

NOTICE:

Correctly set the rear No. 2 drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH to the guide groove.

(b) Using a thin-bladed screwdriver, stake the rear No. 2 drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH

NOTICE:

Do not damage the outboard joint boot.

3. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP LH

(a) Install SST to the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH, and then while pressing the outboard joint boot, slightly tighten the SST bolt.

SST: 09521-24010

NOTICE:

  • Correctly set the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH to the guide groove.
  • Do not damage the outboard joint boot.

(b) Tighten SST so that the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH is pinched.

Standard Clearance:

1.2 mm (0.0472 in.) or less

NOTICE:

  • When tightening SST, make sure the clearance of the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH is within the standard clearance.
  • Do not damage the outboard joint boot.

(c) Remove SST from the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH.

(d) Using SST, measure the clearance of the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH.

SST: 09240-00020

Standard Clearance:

1.2 mm (0.0472 in.) or less

NOTICE:

If the measured value exceeds the specified value, retighten the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH.

4. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT ASSEMBLY LH

(a) Install new parts to the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly LH in the following order.

Rear No. 2 Drive Shaft Inboard Joint Boot Clamp LH

Protective Tape

Outboard Joint Side

Inboard Joint Side

(1) Rear drive shaft inboard joint boot clamp LH

(2) Inboard joint boot

(3) Rear No. 2 drive shaft inboard joint boot clamp LH

(b) Remove the protective tape from the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly LH.

(c) Install the ball cage to the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly LH.

NOTICE:

Install the ball cage with its smaller inner diameter side facing the outboard joint.

(d) Align the matchmarks placed before removal and install the inner race to the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly LH using a brass bar and a hammer.

(e) Using a snap ring expander, install a new snap ring.

NOTICE:

The snap ring should be installed completely.

(f) Align the matchmarks placed before removal and install the ball cage to the inner race.

(g) Install the 6 balls with grease to the inner race.

NOTICE:

Do not drop the balls.

HINT:

Apply grease onto the balls to keep them from falling.

(h) Pack the rear drive shaft inboard joint assembly LH and inboard joint boot with grease from the boot kit.

Standard Grease Capacity:

132.0 to 142.0 g (4.7 to 5.0 oz)

(i) Align the matchmarks and install the rear drive shaft inboard joint assembly LH to the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly LH.

5. INSTALL INBOARD JOINT BOOT

(a) Install the inboard joint boot to the rear drive shaft inboard joint assembly LH.

NOTICE:

  • Do not apply grease to the part of the inboard joint boot that contacts the groove.
  • Do not allow foreign matter to enter the inboard joint boot.

(b) Check that the inboard joint boot and outboard joint boot are not stretched or contracted when the rear drive shaft assembly LH is at the standard length.

Length (A):

598.1 to 608.1 cm (1.96 to 1.99 ft.)

NOTICE:

Keep the rear drive shaft assembly LH level during inspection.

If the inboard joint boot and outboard joint boot are stretched or contracted, correct them.

6. INSTALL REAR NO. 2 DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP LH

Claw Engagement

(a) Install the rear No. 2 drive shaft inboard joint boot clamp LH to the drive shaft inboard joint boot.

NOTICE:

Correctly set the rear No. 2 drive shaft inboard joint boot clamp LH to the guide groove.

(b) Using needle-nose pliers, hold the rear No. 2 drive shaft inboard joint boot clamp LH at the claw engagement.

NOTICE:

  • Do not damage the outboard joint boot.
  • Do not deform the claw engagement of the rear No. 2 drive shaft inboard joint boot clamp LH.

7. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP LH

HINT:

Use the same procedure described for the rear No. 2 drive shaft inboard joint boot clamp LH.

8. INSPECT REAR DRIVE SHAFT
